Funny how serious I am about being funny

My before-and-after copywriting trick for unlocking trust

Day 113/100

Hey—It's Tim.

Should you try to be funny?

Yes.
Absolutely.
Especially when the topic’s serious.

Not to be liked.
But to be read.

Humour is a trust unlock.
It shows there’s a real person behind the words.
And when people trust you, they listen.

The trick isn’t writing jokes.
It’s letting the truth peek through the cracks.

Here’s how I do it:

Write the serious thing first

Find the line that sounds like a brochure

Say it again — but how you'd say it to a mate over coffee

Example:
Let’s say you’re writing about SEO.

Before:

“It's essential to build topical authority across your content pillars to improve long-term ranking potential.”

After:

“If Google can’t tell what you’re about, you’re just a blog with commitment issues.”

Same insight.
One sounds like a keynote.
The other makes you nod and maybe grin.

What’s crazy about this is the first one is how most websites write their headlines.

And the second one is the what makes money…

Do that once per piece. Maybe twice.
You don’t need to turn the whole article into a stand-up set.
You just need to show up with a little edge.

Let the reader know you’ve been in the trenches too.
That’s what makes the serious stuff stick.

Same brain, different platforms: X, Threads, LinkedIn.

P.S. I’m convinced we just need to say what we do out loud. And then use that verbatim as our company taglines.
