Here's how we rank content in 7 days with this one internal linking trick
Why publishing one at a time is killing your traffic.
Hey Penfriends,
Time to address one of the most common questions I get, hands down...
QUESTION: "Hey, we've been publishing content regularly for months, but it takes forever to rank. We're writing good stuff, but it feels like each article is just sitting there alone on our site. Everyone says internal linking is important, but it takes months to build enough content to link between. Help! We're publishing 2-3 times a week but seeing no momentum."
MY ANSWER: The classic “we can’t build internal links because we have nothing to build from…” (Catchy name I know).
I get this message in one way or another pretty much every day.
It might be the single biggest reason marketing teams give up on organic marketing.
I know this pain well, and me being me. We solved it and then automated it.
We automated the hub and spoke model.
If you want to test it fill out this form to sign up the beta testers.
I'm going to give you a little-known secret to solving this internal linking problem.
Thing is, the solution is SO SIMPLE that you're going to laugh when you see it.
By the way, there's a lot of experienced content marketers who don't even know the trick I'm about to tell you, so pay attention...
If you're struggling to build internal links, waiting months for content to start working together, or think you need to publish for 6 months before you can have a proper internal linking structure, then try this:
Stop publishing one piece at a time.
Let me explain. We’ve been pushing content for months. We were doing everything "right" - good research, solid writing, regular publishing schedule. But nothing was ranking.
Until we added internal links to the blogs we were looking to push
So we figured, why aren’t we pushing all the articles at once.
Instead of publishing one piece at a time and trying to find linking opportunities later, we make all the content in batches. Every article was written and interlinked before a single piece went live.
Here's how we do it:
Plan 8-12 related articles around a topic
Add the URL of the Penfriend blog
Click “add hub” to this batch. This automatically makes a hub suggestion and starts connecting all the dots ⤴️
Get Penfriend.ai to write them all at once
Because we know the links before we publish, we can get the AI to automatically work out the best places for all the links to go for every blog.
All the blogs link to each other, the hub, and the hub to every article
Launch everything together
The results we’ve seen from this?
At least one of these articles ranks page one within a week. And the rest follow quickly after.
Why? Because from day one, it had 8 relevant internal links pointing to it.
Not in 3 months. Not after publishing dozens more articles. Day ONE.
If you're doing it right, each piece of content should launch with 5-8 internal links already pointing to it. You can do this without Penfriend when you’re planning your content. Write the URLs when you decide your keywords,
mysite .com / blog1
mysite .com /blog2
etc
And then, when the content is being written, include the links to be used in the briefs you give your writers. Doesn’t matter if the page doesn’t exist at the time of writing. It will exist, and the link will connect just fine.
The difference here is I can have a 8-20 article hub and spoke model ready and published in less time than it takes to outline one of these articles. Oh, and I it’s written in my tone too.
(Want to know the really wild part? This works even better than building links over time, because Google sees the relevance immediately rather than having to re-crawl your site for months.)
Try it sometime and watch your content rank faster than ever!
Take care and keep scaling,
Tim
P.S. Of course, writing and interlinking 8-12 articles manually would take forever, and that’s if you only have one hub to make. With Penfriend.ai I built out 4×25 page hub+spokes for a client in an afternoon. Complete with their echo too.
