Why Does It Always Snow On Me?

Is is because my padding's set to seventeen? 🎵

Day 23/100

Holy snowflakes, Batman! 32cm of snow overnight?!

While digging myself out yesterday morning, I had a galaxy brain moment:

Most website designs needed exactly what my driveway didn't—MORE WHITE SPACE.

Minimalism isn't just for Scandinavian furniture anymore.

It's the secret sauce for designs that actually convert. Less really is more (except when it comes to coffee or pizza).

Why Less Is More in Modern UI

Remember the cluttered websites and busy landing pages of the early 2000s? Those days are (thankfully) behind us. Today's most effective designs embrace the power of emptiness – strategic white space that gives your content room to breathe.

2 Quick Ways to Get More White Space Today:

  1. Implement the "Rule of 8" for Padding and Margins

    • Use multiples of 8 pixels for all spacing in your design

    • Small spacing: 8px or 16px

    • Medium spacing: 24px or 32px

    • Large spacing: 40px or 48px

    • Apply this to margins between sections, padding within containers, and space between elements

  2. Optimize Line Height for Better Readability

    • For body text: Set line height to exactly 150% of font size

    • Example: 16px text → 24px line height

    • For headers: Use 120-130% of font size

    • Example: 32px header → 38-42px line height

One of my favourite websites that does this so well is the A24 shop.
Just chef’s kiss

Just like fresh snow highlights the beauty of the mountains by creating contrast, strategic white space highlights what matters most in your design.

Stay warm and well-spaced,
