Hey—It's Tim. 

A few weeks back I'm sat at my desk re-doing the copy for the new home page on the site.

And I write this phrase down in my notes.

And for the first time, I felt the emotional center of the thing we’re building.

The pit in my stomach

AI isn’t the villain.
Slop is.

The thought that Penfriend could ever be thrown in the AI-slop pile makes me sick.
It’s the thing that wakes me at three a.m. and sends me back to the keyboard.

We could stitch three prompts together, spend fractions of a cent, and puke out a post.
That would be easy.
It would also be a betrayal.

The goal here is not to build a slot machine for content.
I’m building a standard I can live with.

I will not write sloppy blogs

Looking back at all the decisions we’ve made, it’s been the deciding factor every time.

Three weeks ago we shipped the biggest update to Penfriend ever.
All in a chase to make better articles for you.

And then in the last 3 weeks we’ve shipping another 16 smaller updates.
Every change came from you. Every one asked the same question:
Does this reduce slop?

What it costs

I want to be real with you. We, the founders, don’t take paychecks.
Every dollar goes back into the product.

Because “good enough” is how rot starts.
Because I want to ship work I’d put my name on twice.

We will soon though. More and more amazing people are understanding what we’re building. And seeing the value in a software that’s build to help you write. Not built to replace you.

My word to you

It is so important to me to build this into a company that I'm proud of, that I use every day and that you use every day.

And doesn't make AI slop.

So, I put all of this publicly on the website.

As a mantra.
As a company manifesto.
As a promise.
